Iowa CE Requirements for License Renewal
As a nurse in the state of Iowa, you are required to earn continuing education to renew your active license. All of our CE activities are accredited by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). To assist you in meeting your state’s continuing education requirements, we have added links to related topics. Please ensure that any activity meets the requirements of your state board of nursing.

Advanced Practice
- Every three years
- 36 hours of continuing education as required for RN license renewal
- 1 hour related to the identification and reporting of child/dependent adult abuse offered by the Iowa Department of Human Services (for those who regularly examine, attend, counsel or treat dependent adults or children); initial course is 2 hours.
- At least 2 hours regarding the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guideline for prescribing opioids for chronic pain, including recommendations on limitations on dosages and the length of prescriptions, risk factors for abuse, and nonopiod and nonpharmacologic therapy options. - There are no extra continuing education credits required for the ARNP license. ARNPs are deemed to be in compliance with Iowa continuing ed requirements by their compliance with the requirements of their national certifying body, as evidenced by their current certification card required for each renewal.
