North Carolina CE Requirements for License Renewal
As a nurse in the state of North Carolina, you are required to earn continuing education to renew your active license. All of our CE activities are accredited by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Please ensure that any activity meets the requirements of your state board of nursing.
Renewal Requirements
RN
- Every two years
- 30 hours of continuing education OR
- 15 hours of continuing education AND one of the following: completion of a nursing project; authoring or co-authoring a nursing-related article, paper, book or book chapter; developing and conducting a nursing continuing education presentation or presentations totaling a minimum of five contact hours; or 640 hours of active practice
LPN
- Every two years
- 30 hours of continuing education OR
- 15 hours of continuing education AND one of the following: completion of a nursing project; authoring or co-authoring a nursing-related article, paper, book or book chapter; developing and conducting a nursing continuing education presentation or presentations totaling a minimum of five contact hours; or 640 hours of active practice
Advanced Practice
- Every year
- 50 hours of continuing education (at least 20 hours of the required 50 must be approved by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or Accreditation Council on Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) or other national credentialing bodies or practice relevant courses in an institution of higher learning)
- 1 hour on controlled substance prescribing practices, signs of the abuse or misuse of controlled substances, and controlled substance prescribing for chronic pain management for nurse practitioners who prescribe controlled substances
